God is at Work

Dear Spry Church Family and Friends,

Now that it's starting to feel like January, I hope you are staying warm! I think of a song sung by my high school choir called "Blow, Blow Thou Winter Wind." That wind has certainly been blowing.

I also think about the warmth we know by gathering together in God's house for worship. In worship we encounter the Lord who renews our strength and warms our hearts with his love. This Sunday we continue our series about things that can steal our joy if we let them, and we'll focus on negativity. There is always something we could complain about - including the weather! On Sunday we'll explore what negativity does to us, our outlook, our spirits, our relationships, even our brains (I'll share results from a fascinating study about that), and how we can overcome this joy thief. A message on negativity sounds depressing, but I promise this one will be helpful and parts of it will actually be quite uplifting and encouraging.

Speaking of encouragement, here's an update on how God is at work in our church - this is amazing! We keep a database of kids registered in our SPLASH Kids ministry (that means they've come on Sundays to worship, Sunday School, and/or Kids Club - that does not include the many dozens more community kids who have come to our Vacation Bible School); 12 months ago we had 90 kids, and now we have 161! Isn't that great?

This is just one example of God's work among us to form disciples of Jesus and impact our community with God's love. We also see growth in our Student Ministries with junior and senior high students, our Congregational Care Ministry including ministry with senior adults, our ministries of worship and music, and more. I believe these are signs of what the Lord has in store for us as we continue to follow in faith. To God be the glory!

My wife Molly and I received a thank you note from one of the York Township Elementary School teachers, the teacher who had our daughter Annie in kindergarten last year. I want to share part of it with you, because it's an example of your impact on our community, Spry Church:

Hello! This morning at our faculty meeting, we learned that Spry Church donated over $4000 to our school for its backpack program and other needs.  I just wanted to personally thank you for all you and your family and church have done for our school and in being such wonderful role models in our community....Thanks again for all that you do!

Encouragement is like verbal sunshine, and that's such a blessing especially during cold wintry days like these. Thank you again, Spry Church, for your faithfulness! I am so grateful to be your pastor. I thank God for this privilege, each day.

For now, stay warm and I hope to see you on Sunday!

In Christ's love,

Ken
